The launch of the Entry/Exit System (EES) on 12 October 2025, marked a significant milestone in EU’s effort to modernise and streamline external border management and enhance security. The system is being rolled out progressively at the air, land and sea borders, which allows the border guards, transport companies and travellers to adjust to the new procedures.

Modernising and Securing Borders

The EES records entries and exits of non-EU nationals coming for short stays, their biometric data and personal data from the travel document as well as refusals of entry. Once fully operation in April 2026, these digital checks will replace passport stamps. The system will gradually make crossing borders smoother with faster checks and self-service possibilities.

Besides modernising border crossing for non-EU travellers, the EES will also enhance security across the Schengen area. The EES will help track who comes in and out of the Schengen Area and will automatically detect travellers who overstay their permitted duration. Collection of biometric data—such as facial images and fingerprints – will significantly help prevent identity fraud. Data stored in the EES will empower law enforcement authorities to fight against serious crimes and terrorism.

Ultimately, the EES will contribute to a safer Europe, benefiting both its citizens and visitors.
