The Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational at all external Schengen border crossing points since 10 April 2026. Since its launch the system has registered over 150 million entries and exits.
The EES helps border officers and law enforcement authorities to spot security risks and support the fight against serious crimes and terrorism. One example is the case from February 2026, when the system was able to reveal a man who wasn’t who he claimed to be. The EES uncovered his three previous attempts to enter the Schengen area under different identities. Without the system, this man would not have been stopped. Check the video to find out more:
The EES applies to non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay to the Schengen area and records travel document data, biometric data (fingerprints and facial image) and data on their entries and exits. Nationals of EU countries and of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland are not registered in the EES.
