The recent outcomes of Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions COPs mark a significant milestone in global efforts to address environmental challenges. The Commission welcomes important advancements to protect human health and the environment from the detrimental effects of hazardous chemicals and waste.

First, the progress on chemicals made under the Stockholm Convention is a crucial step forward in our commitment to eliminate persistent organic pollutants.

In the Basel Convention, major achievements reflect the EU’s commitment to address environmental issues linked to textile waste on a global stage and foster a competitive circular economy.

Finally, under the Rotterdam Convention, the listing of two pesticides—carbosulfan and fenthion—shows global determination to combat the use of hazardous chemicals and ensure a safer, more sustainable future.

The Commission also welcomes the continued support from parties to create an intergovernmental science-policy panel to promote better management of chemical and waste globally
