Commission to discuss with Member States and international partners the implementation of sanctions against Russia and Belarus

The seventh meeting of the High‑Level Group on Union Restrictive Measures (sanctions) will be held tomorrow 8 April 2025.

Tomorrow, 8 April, Commissioner for Financial Services and the Savings and Investments Union, Maria Luís Albuquerque, will chair the seventh meeting of the High‑Level Group on Union Restrictive Measures (sanctions). These meetings assess the EU’s ongoing efforts to ensure that the unprecedented sanctions imposed on Russia and Belarus, in response to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, achieve their objectives.

In the morning, Commissioner Albuquerque will discuss with high-level representatives from Member States the coordination of the sanctions implementation and enforcement of sanctions, particularly in view of the latest geopolitical developments. The participants will share best practices, address current challenges, and secure pragmatic solutions.

In the afternoon, Commissioner Albuquerque will open the fifth Sanctions Coordinators Forum dedicated to sanctions enforcement and fighting circumvention. The Forum is convened by EU Sanctions Envoy David O’Sullivan. This meeting includes Member States and international partners, including the UK, US, Japan, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, as well as Ukraine. The Forum is a vital platform in the Commission’s international effort to ensure full and effective implementation of EU sanctions, tackle their possible circumvention through third countries and ensure alignment with international partners.

Statements will be published after the meetings.
