Accessibility in housing is still a pending task in Spain. Only 154,800 homes out of 26 million are accessible, and an around 100,000 persons cannot leave their homes due to barriers and lack of assistance.
In light of this situation, the Observatory 2030 of the High Council of the Orders of Architects of Spain launched a guide to help achieving universal accessibility in dwellings. It not only seeks to remove physical barriers but also to improve quality of life for all persons and to promote a more just and equitable society.
The guidelines were developed within the framework of the New European Bauhaus, a policy and funding initiative of the European Commission that makes green transition in built environments and beyond enjoyable, attractive and convenient for all.
The guidelines were developed with the support from more than 100 experts and organisations and public institutions such as Fundación ONCE and the Spanish Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda, among others.
