The European Commission is launching the first matching round under the Biomethane Mechanism to bring potential buyers and suppliers of biomethane together across Europe. This marks an important step in supporting the scale-up of biomethane production.
The launch is accompanied by the rollout of the Regulatory Dashboard, a new tool designed to help market participants navigate and compare national compliance frameworks for biomethane across Europe. Initially, it covers selected EU countries, already accounting for more than 90% of the EU’s current biomethane production. By making regulatory information more accessible, the dashboard aims to facilitate cross-border opportunities, supporting the development of a more integrated European biomethane market.
Through the matching round, potential buyers can submit their biomethane demand, while suppliers can express interest in meeting that demand. Following the matching process, participants with a match will receive the relevant information to contact each other and explore, outside the mechanism, potential commercial opportunities.
Timeline
Background
The Biomethane Mechanism, launched in June 2026, is a key initiative under the EU Energy and Raw Materials Platform designed to support the scale up of biomethane production, trade, and investment across Europe, reinforcing energy security, decarbonisation and industrial competitiveness. Against the backdrop of geopolitical instability and continued pressure on energy markets, a domestic, storable and sustainable energy source such as biomethane can help reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels. The mechanism is a voluntary and free-of-charge tool.
