Gender stereotypes hold everyone back
Speakers from the webinar shared that, despite progress in gender equality, stereotypes still shape how young people see their abilities and career options – often limiting their choices long before they enter the labour market.
In vocational education and training (VET), these biases are particularly visible: women remain underrepresented in STEM, while men are unlikely to engage in education and care professions.
This imbalance not only reinforces social stigma but also restricts talent development, limits innovation, and weakens Europe’s competitiveness.
Tackling gender stereotypes
To address these challenges, the European Commission has launched several key initiatives. For example, the Union of Skills which includes a forthcoming VET strategy and a STEM education strategic plan aiming to train one million girls and women by 2028.
Alongside the Union of Skills is the EU Gender Equality Strategy and the #EndGenderStereotypes campaign – both of which raise awareness about how stereotypes influence study and career choices.
