On 18-19 June, Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Síkela visited Stockholm to meet with Swedish stakeholders, align strategic interests under the Global Gateway strategy and strengthen the Team Europe approach. In a series of high-level meetings, Commissioner Síkela exchanged with partners on how Global Gateway promotes economic growth on a global scale, and benefits both the European Union and partner countries.

Commissioner Jozef Síkela commented, “My first visit to Sweden as European Commissioner for International Partnerships has confirmed our common determination to turn the rising demand for cooperation with the EU into real opportunities for European actors to engage globally under Global Gateway. Our goals are clear: human-centred development, stability, European competitiveness and security.”

Commissioner Síkela exchanged with Minister for International Development Benjamin Dousa on deepening EU-Sweden coordination and harnessing shared expertise under Global Gateway to deliver positive impact both for partner countries and for Europe.

Commissioner Síkela visited the premises of the Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson to discuss expanding Europe’s trusted digital offer, from 5G and fibre networks to subsea cables, with secure and trusted infrastructure made in Europe.

At a roundtable with representatives from the private sector, civil society and government, Commissioner Síkela presented the next steps to advancing Global Gateway, including how companies can be more involved in delivering transformative change on the ground in partner countries.

The Commissioner also met with leaders of the Swedish asset management company FAM AB Company to exchange views on their Global Gateway experience, including the challenges they face, the opportunities ahead and how to seize them better together.

Background

Global Gateway is the EU’s positive offer to reduce the worldwide investment disparity and boost smart, clean and secure connections in digital, energy and transport sectors, and to strengthen health, education and research systems.

The Global Gateway strategy embodies a Team Europe approach that brings together the European Union, EU Member States, and European development finance institutions. Together, we aim to mobilise up to €300 billion in public and private investments from 2021 to 2027, creating essential links rather than dependencies, and closing the global investment gap.
