Limerick City and County Council’s Active Travel team has earned national recognition at the Irish Construction Excellence Awards (ICE awards) for their work on the Childers Road Active Travel Route. The project won in the ‘Public Realm up to €5 million’ category.
Designed to boost connectivity across Limerick, the Childers Road Active Travel Scheme focuses on providing safer and more accessible active travel routes for pedestrians and cyclists. It forms a vital part of the broader Limerick Shannon Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy and aligns closely with the goals set out in the Limerick Development Plan 2022-2028. The initiative prioritises safety, accessibility and sustainable transport modes, aiming to benefit local residents, students commuters and businesses.
Key Project Features:
The route connects the eastern and western areas of Limerick, linking Dooradoyle and Raheen with the University of Limerick and Castletroy. The project involves significant infrastructure upgrades such as:
- Installing segregated cycle tracks and junction tightening
- New pedestrian crossing points at Roxboro Roundabout
- Footpath widening for improved accessibility
- Upgraded bus stops
- Signalised junctions
- Enhanced and safer front-of-school areas for four schools
- Landscaping and the protection of existing trees, requiring innovative construction techniques

The scheme has delivered meaningful improvements for the needs of local communities by elevating safety, accessibility and environmental standards. The scheme supports the shift towards more sustainable urban mobility, supporting active travel and plays a pivotal role in shaping Limerick’s future growth as a more sustainable and connected city.
