Euronews OCEAN Season 7, Episode 5 – Wind turbines innovation

Europe needs to secure its energy future, and offshore renewables are set to play a key role. The EU member states aim to increase offshore power capacity 18-fold by 2050.  But getting there won’t be simple: the sector faces some big challenges.

The EU member states aim to increase offshore power capacity 18-fold by 2050.  But getting there won’t be simple: the sector faces some big challenges. One of them — the high cost of running and maintaining offshore wind farms, with operational expenses making up almost 30% of the total costs. 

In this episode of Ocean, we explore the cutting-edge innovations shaping the future of offshore wind. From port expansions and next-generation installation vessels to smarter, more connected wind farms. We visit Kriegers Flak, Scandinavia’s largest offshore wind park, linking Danish and German grids through pioneering technology. And in Riga, we meet the team at Aerones — a fast-growing EU-backed company building robots that inspect turbine blades, helping cut down the high cost and complexity of offshore maintenance.
