Costas Kadis, Commissioner for Oceans and Fisheries, will attend the European Maritime Day in Cork, in Ireland, on May 22 and 23, where he will officially open the event alongside Irish Prime minister Micheál Martin, Darragh O’Brien, Minister for Climate, Environment and Energy of Ireland, Timmy Dooley, Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor Dan Boyle.

The European Maritime Day, co-organised by the European Commission, brings together Europe’s maritime community, to share knowledge, discuss key issues and outline collective actions for maritime affairs and sustainable blue economy. This year’s discussions will focus on the upcoming European Ocean Pact, a key initiative that will be setting the EU vision and aim at increasing coherence across all ocean-related policies.

During his visit, Commissioner Kadis will visit several flagship initiatives that are driving the development of a sustainable blue economy. These projects focus on promoting the skills and expertise needed for example in the fields of sustainable fishing and aquaculture. These include the National Maritime College of Ireland, the Lir National Ocean Test Facility, MaREI (Research Ireland Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine), and the Good Fish Processing Facility. He will also engage with representatives from fisheries and aquaculture organisations as well as environmental NGOs.

Commissioner Kadis will also take part in the 20th anniversary celebration ceremony of the European Fisheries Control Agency and visit the agency’s patrol vessel ‘Ocean Guardian’, which will be docked in Cork for the occasion.

The opening and all plenary sessions will be livestreamed. You can find more information in the program of the European Maritime Day.
