The European Defence Fund (EDF) BattleVerse project has launched its first Open Call for Cascade Funding.
Applications are open from 14 September to 16 November 2026.
The project is developing an advanced virtual battlespace that combines real-world data with computer-generated simulations to improve training, scenario testing and mission preparation across multiple operational domains.
What are we looking for?
The first BattleVerse Open Call will support up to 20 beneficiaries working on innovative technologies for defence mission planning, simulation, training and operations.
Who can participate?
The call is primarily aimed at SMEs and start-ups established in EU Member States, Norway or Ukraine.
Projects may be carried out by a single entity or by a consortium of up to three eligible beneficiaries.
Participation of research organisations and academic institutions is possible, but must be justified in the proposal.
Technical topics
Proposals should address one of the following areas:
- Topic 1: Large language models to support strategic decision-making, symbolic reasoning, game theory, and planning under uncertainty
- Topic 2: Multi-physics simulation capabilities for multi-domain defence environments
- Topic 3: Distributed AI for autonomous systems (UxVs) for coordinated swarm operations
Next steps
Selected applicants will receive up to €60,000 per beneficiary for projects lasting six months, accompanied by tailored coaching and mentoring provided by the BattleVerse consortium.
