Electricity Coordination Group discusses extreme weather impacts on electricity security of supply in Central Europe and South-East Europe

The European Commission has convened an ad hoc meeting of the Electricity Coordination Group today with EU countries, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity, the relevant Regional Coordination Centres and the Energy Community Secretariat to discuss the electricity security of supply in Central and South-East Europe.

The discussion took place against the backdrop of persistent high temperatures and record low water levels, all of which are putting pressure on electricity generation and demand in these regions. The Group confirmed that security of electricity supply is stable and there are no short-term adequacy risks, while the situation is expected to remain tight in the forthcoming weeks.

The Group stressed the importance of preserving water flows in the Danube when national initiatives involving interventions in the river to raise water levels to support power generation are planned or taking place. In addition, the Group highlighted the importance of continuing the close coordination, including with TSOs and Regional Coordination Centres, and of ensuring that the single electricity market continues to allow electricity to flow to the countries where it is more needed.

The Commission will continue to monitor the situation across Europe, support coordinated action where needed and maintain regular communication with EU countries and ENTSO-E, as well as with the Energy Community Secretariat.
